History for June 2008 Trail Blazer
From November 1979 Trail Blazer
Here's a story as told by Fern Becker Anderson who received the 2008 Henry Waespe
Distinguished Service Award. It comes from a request by Darrel Tarter in 1979
for a Trails Club experience.
Two requirements to be met before we could take our first trip to Nesika Lodge were that we would walk all the way in and out without having to be carried and that we could go to bed in the dorm when our parents were still at the lodge.
When I was just over three years old, I felt I could meet these requirements, so on August 13-14, 1938, my parents took me on my first trip to Nesika for the "Old Timer's Chicken Dinner." I don't remember too much about it, except the elated feeling that I finally had achieved the goal of going to the 'cabin' with my parents. There were 50 people at Nesika that weekend and the weather was good with a few clouds and temperature about 70°.
Little girls didn't wear slacks in 1938, so I hiked in a dress with matching panties and high-top shoes with knee high socks.
It was a good weekend, one of just over 118 [and counting] trips I have enjoyed to Nesika, thanks to my parents and many friends in the Trails Club.
Mt Talbert Nature Hike
The trip was on May 10th. It was listed in the newsletter as "Mt. Talbert Nature Park (slow pace Class A)"
The leader, June Smelser was joined by one member, Janet Figini, and 3 guests, Glenda, Ruth and Bobbie for an easy uphill hike throuogh the Nature Park which is located just off Mather Rd. in the Sunnyside, Clackamas Town Center area.
This park is surrounded by apartments, homes, businesses, and roads. It is a lovely respite from all of that noise. The hiking trail leads right out of the parking lot, picnic area just off Mather Rd. and goes immediately uphill. This was somewhat daunting for this hiker as I had not been hiking for many years but our leader was true to her word about it being a slow hike.
The day was overcast and cool, just perfect for an uphill hike, the trail was mostly dry and easy to navigate. Trail markers were in place and easy to follow except while on our descent when we took a trail to another trail head instead of the one we were looking for. Our mistake, not the marker! We were quickly back on the decending trail however and made the smaller loop of two offered within 3 hours. All in all, a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Dog Hike
Being a dog owner myself I wanted to share a sad incident that happened this weekend. I was on a backpack trip led by Gerda Eck this weekend on the Lower Deschutes River. It was a short and pretty hike, hiking in about 3.5 miles and camping in a pretty little meadow. The weather was beautiful and there were a lot of hikers, bikers and runners out on the trail.
On Sunday we were hiking out on the gravel path, with the intention to branch off of the road at the trail junction where you can hike up and around the canyon back to your cars. We decided to take a break at the intersection to decide if we were going to split into 2 groups, as we had a few beginner hikers that did not want to take the longer route out. At this time we saw a few deer running along the ridge which we were watching and then suddenly we saw another one running down towards us. Our first thought was that it was maybe being chased by a coyote, then realized there were two dogs on its tail. The two dogs, ended up getting it down a couple of times, and we can all image what dogs can do to an animal. There was nobody in sight of the dogs, and then about a minute or two later we see a jogger coming down the trail.
We confronted her about the incident, and she did say they were her dogs. She had no idea about what her dogs had just done to this deer as they were completely out of her site. We did let her know that we were going to report her, as she proceeding down the road to her car.
The state police showed up about 20 minutes later and unfortunately weren't in time to confront the lady with the two dogs. From what we can see the deer had a broken back leg and had been chewed on a bit. Unfortunately the state police were not able to locate it.
I wanted to share this with everyone because this is not something that we go out in the wilderness to see. We go out there to enjoy the wilderness not bring danger to them. Being a dog owner myself, this is just an example why we really need to be responsible dog owners while we are out hiking.
Thanks for reading ! Lisa Conrad
