Let's Talk About

I am a new member and participated in my first backpacking event last weekend. This was the Herman Ck./Gorton Ck./Wyeth Loop Backpack trip which was organized and led by Elizabeth McLagan. Elizabeth did an excelent job overall but where she really came through for the group was on Saturday when the trail to Green Pt disappeared under snow and there were no tracks of previous hikers to follow. So we oriented ourselves for several hours based on old blaze markings, compas readings and her experience hiking the trail several years ago. Although we all pitched in to stay on track, Elizabeth was clearly the leader and this was, in my opinion, a great reflection on the Trails Club.
I just wanted to share this with you and recommend it as a story in your newsletter.

Hamilton Mountain Hike - May 19, 2009

Mid-May is peak wildflower time on Hamilton Mountain. Despite alternating showery/sunny weather, two members and one aspiring member set off on the 9-mile, 2,400 ft. elevation gain loop. We identified more than 30 species of flowers in bloom along the trail, including the spectacular mats of spreading phlox coloring the slopes of Hamilton Mountain. We stopped for photos on the summit and then hiked across to the saddle to check for Columbia Lewisia. We found many buds but no plants in bloom yet due to the cool spring. We stopped for lunch and then returned via the Hardy Creek Trail. We managed to stay dry until a heavy rain shower caught us on the last mile back to the trailhead.

Upper Falls Creek Backpack, June 12-13, 2009

Thunder rumbling overhead gave an additional level of excitement to the very first backpack trip for 5 women from my Women's Beginning Backpacking Class. We had changed our backpack destination due to forecast thunderstorms and heavy rain showers for the Ball Point/School Canyon Trail area. We hiked the Upper Falls Creek Trail under partly sunny skies but the rumble of thunder began as we made camp and filtered water. In the late afternoon, the thunderstorm passed over with some brief rain showers, but by dinner time we were out of our tents and cooking dinner. We enjoyed a campfire and a short hike the next morning before packing back out. The backpack was 6.8 miles with about 1,000 feet elevation gain.
