All visitors and Trails Club members are encouraged to enjoy the great Northwest outdoors by selecting a hike, bike ride or other event from this calendar. Gentle Reminders provides explanation of hike difficulty and hike guideline. Detail description of common meeting is available at Meeting Places.


Events

Week-1

August 1 (Sun) Mosier Tunnels - Class B

We start on the 5 mile Mark Hatfield bike/ped trail through the Mosier Tunnels from Hood River to Mosier, then climb from Mosier to Rowena Crest, returning with a stop in Mosier for your lunch and optional ice cream. A subgroup may do a longer ride which includes a segment connecting Rowena Crest to the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles. The basic ride is about 24 miles with roughly 1000 feet of elevation gain; the longer version is about 37 miles with roughly 1800 feet of elevation gain.
Depart: 10 a.m. from Mark Hatfield Trailhead just past Hood River. There is a $5 parking fee (or state park pass) at the trailhead. Please register with leader, indicating which length ride you will do. Indicate if you wish to carpool with bikes to start point from Lewis & Clark State Park at 9 a.m. (offering or requesting ride).

August 2 (Mon) City Bike Ride - Class A

Starting at Creston park we'll do a fifteen mile loop going south to Crystal springs, bock north along 26th, past Ladd's addition, across the Hawthorne bridge, with a side trip to River Place marina for ice cream, then back across the Burnside bridge up to Laurelhust park, then side streets back to Creston park.
Meet at Creston park parking lot just south of Powell one block on 42nd at six pm. Back by 8:30

Aug 4 (Wed) Portland Evening Hike - Class B

We will hike approximately 6 miles in Forest Park and the West Hills with 500 feet of noncumulative elevation gain. Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather. Return about 8:00 pm.

August 5 (Thu) North Portland-Kelley Point Park Bike Ride - Class A

Moderately-paced, flat ride with a number of stops through North Portland. Bring a lunch for a picnic at Kelley Point Park. Total mileage around 20 miles. Please make sure your bike tires are pumped before you come. Call or email with questions.
Meet: University of Portland, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd, 9:45 am for a 10 am departure.
Come in the main entrance off of Willamette Blvd and make the first right. Parking lot is right next to the soccer center.

August 7 (Sat) Banks-Vernonia Linear Bicycle Ride - Class B

Moved from July 24

We will start at the Manning Trailhead next to Hwy 26, and ride up to Vernonia on a mostly paved, bike/walking path. The trail is built on a former railroad bed and goes through beautiful forested land. The trail starts with a gentle elevation gain for 7 miles. A 31/2 mile section is unpaved, some of which is rough and rocky. Bikes with wider tires may be more comfortable, but the trail is passable with a road bike. We will eat our lunch along Vernonia Lake, and return along the same path. Contact leader for start time, directions, and any questions. 37 miles total.

Aug 8 (Sun) Vista Ridge Loop Hike - Class B

Loop past Eden Park, Cairn Basin, Wy'east Basin, Elk Cove, and Dollar Lake. Long drive, and the hike is not for beginners, but this is an all-day outing that you will remember forever: wildflowers galore, the perfect mountain meadows, views of Mt. Hood and other peaks, and a tiny mountain lake. Bring food, water. Sandals and trekking poles recommended for a possible wet stream crossing or two. Hike 10 miles with around 2500 feet of total gain. No registration required, but contact leader if you have questions. This hike goes into the Mt. Hood Wilderness and group must be held to 12 hikers. Drivers need a trailhead parking permit. Drive 175 miles round trip.

Aug 14 (Sat) Nesika Membership Qualifying Hike - Class B

A beautiful trek up from Multnomah Lodge to the historic and tranquil grounds of Trails Clubs Nesika Lodge, offering a babbling creek, lush woods and gradual elevation along the way. Trails Club folks will be at the lodge working so it will be open for your visit. Bring water and lunch or snacks. Hike about 8 miles round trip with 1700-1800 feet elevation gain at a moderate-plus pace. Drive 48 miles round trip.

Aug 14 (Sat) Willamette Mission Bike Ride - Class B-

This is a day ride stating at the Wheatland Ferry. The ride distance will be about 25 miles. We will tour the South French Prairie probably including Mt. Angel area for lunch. We can adjust the ride based on weather and participants interests.
Meet: at the East side of the Wheatland Ferry at 9:00 AM
Take I5 south to the Brooks/Gervais exit, turn right, follow signs to Mission State Park. Continue past the entrance to the Park, taking the next left to "Wheatland Ferry."

Aug 14-15 (Sat-Sun) Nesika Work Party

Work Trip Canceled

Come and join us at our home in the Columbia Gorge for a weekend of work and fellowship with other members and guests. There are many projects in process that will need attention such as the siding on the women’s dorm, which should be ready for sanding in preparation for painting, installing concrete block on the new retaining/seat wall, hauling and placing rock on the tractor trails and finishing up our fire protection project of clearing brush within 50 feet of the buildings. We will be preparing the lodge and site for the Labor Day Celebration.

Aug 17(Tues) Summer Lake Park Hike - Class A

From the park we will walk on streets and forest paths to the top of Bull Mountain where there are great mountain views. The hike will be about 4 miles round trip with some elevation gain.

A gentle ride of 35-40 miles through the pastoral farmlands of Canby stopping at the Markum Inn for one of their super Markum burgers? for lunch.

Aug 19 (Thur) Evening Picnic - 6 PM - Willamette Park

Bring your favorite picnic potluck dish and plates and eating utensils for yourself or family. The club will provide beverages and a main course. We are asking for a $1 donation for persons over 12 years of age to help defray costs.

Aug 21-21 (Sat-Sun) Hike-N-Dine at Tyee Lodge

Trails Club members Angelo & Katherine Carella and Charles & Debbie Layman will titillate your palates this month with an extravagant feast at Tyee.Saturday Dinner at 6:00 PM will feature a garden fresh salad, succulent Hew York strip steak, twice baked potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, freshly baked bread, and berry shortcake. For those staying overnight fresh fruit, toast, egg, sausage and ham strata await you. Dinner reservations limited to 50.

Aug 20-25 (Fri-Wed) Mt Adams to Mt St. Helens Backpack - Class C

Join us for a mountain-to-mountain backpack. Start at Cold Spring Camp on the south side of Mt Adams and wind our way over to Windy Ridge on Mt St. Helens. We'll go about 10-15 miles per day with time to enjoy the scenery.
We are still exploring and finalizing options for transportation, campsites and water availability. Dog-friendly, but must inform leaders ahead of time.

Aug 28 (Sat) Salmon River Exploratory Hike - Class C

Starting at the trailhead south of Trillium Lake we will follow the Salmon River down stream for 14 miles hiking mostly in the trees. I have not hiked the middle section of this trail so be prepared for the unexpected. There will be 2000 feel elevation loss. A car shuttle is necessary; be prepared for a longer day. Wilderness area so 12 hikers maximum. Trailhead parking permit needed.

August 28-29 (Sat-Sun) Tyee Work Weekend

Beat the heat of Portland and come stay at Tyee! If you use Tyee in the winter please consider volunteering for one work party. Projects include: cleaning siding, painting, bringing in wood, and porch roof repair, Bring work clothes and gloves. For those interested, after dinner hike. Lodging and meals free to volunteers who pre-register! Work starts 10 am Saturday. Lodge will close Sun. at 3PM. Need a cook! Sign-up by Aug. 25th.

Aug 29 (Sun) Helvetia area Bike Ride - Class B

Ride through scenic Western Washington County on less traveled roads for about 30 to 35 miles. We might encounter some hills or we can avoid them, depending on the group.
Meet at 10 am at the New Seasons Market in Orenco Station, 1453 NE 61st Ave, Hillsboro, 97124. The MAX stop is across Cornell Rd from the Market, so it is possible to take the train to the starting point.

Tyee Lodge Membership Qualifying Hike - Class A

The destination on this easy hike is 40 foot West Fork Falls on Mt. Hood below Timberline Lodge. Walk about 4 miles with about 600 feet elevation gain along Westleg Road then along a cross- country ski trail over Still Creek and through forests of Engelmann spruce, mountain hemlock and lodgepole pine. Following the hike visit Tyee Lodge where a group of volunteers will be working to clean and maintain the lodge. Eat your lunch and share freshly baked brownies. Bring water and your lunch. Driving distance 100 miles round trip. No sign-up required but for questions call by 8:30 am Sat the 28th.
Depart: 10:00 am near the restrooms at the rest area on the east end of Government Camp. Call leader for more complete driving directions if needed.
