September 2 (Thu) Willamette Park to Zoo and Back Bike Ride - Class A+
We'll ride from Willamette Park to Goose Hollow, MAX up to the Zoo and ride back down to Willamette Park. Most of the ride is on city streets and
there are some hills, both up and down. Between 15-20 miles. Bring $$ and/or a ticket for the MAX ride. Call me if you have questions.
Meet: 9:45 am for a 10 am departure, in front of Fulton Pub at 0618 SW Nebraska St., near the entrance to Willamette Park. There should be plenty of parking on Nebraska St. or other side streets.

Join your friends at Nesika for Labor Day Weekend to share delicious food,
hiking, cards, Mexican train, Farkle, or just stimulating conversation. Saturday
night will be potluck. Bring a dish to serve 8. Special breakfast and dinner

Join us for a gluten free weekend at Tyee with children's art activity on Saturday. Starting at 1:00 pm a kids hike is scheduled to gather found materials for an art project later in the afternoon. A small donation for supplies will be welcome. Let us know in advance if your child will be participating. (Please note the Tyee kitchen will be gluten free all weekend).

Sep 12 (Sun) Bird Creek Meadows Hike - Class A/B
Anyone interested in camping in this Washington area on Sunday for a Monday hike - let me know promptly.
Hike 6 to 8 miles with 1200 to 1800 feet elevation gain on the east side of Mt. Adams in the Yakama Indian Reservation. This above timberline area is spectacular for flowers which are hopefully still blooming, creeks and views. Prepare for a long day. Driving distance not measured. Parking fee required. The hike will be adjusted according to conditions, group, and flowers. Please register with leader by Sept. 11 before 9 pm.
Depart: 8:00 am from Main Street Troutdale on the east side of the downtown area. Park on the north side of street across from City Hall at the public parking underneath the sign "Troutdale House."

Sep 16-19 (Thur-Sun) Sunset Bay Beach Car Camp
Sunset Bay State Park near Coos Bay offers opportunities to enjoy many outdoor
activities. There is a small, protected cove within walking distance of the
campground for swimming in the warm Pacific waters. You can ride your bike
along country roads and there is a large protected marsh area for canoeing.
There will be a group hike along the rocky coastal headlands to visit Shore
Acres State Park, former Simpson estate with vast public gardens, and then
on to Cape Arago. Brian has reserved two tent sites (D-20 and D-21) that
can be shared. Campsites with full hookups are nearby; call State Parks for
reservations at 800-452-5687. Only costs are TCO trip fee and shared expenses
for campsite.

Sept 17th (Fri) Coastal bike ride - Class B
Starting from Sunset Bay campground, just south of Coos Bay, we'll ride
about 25 miles along country roads exploring the area. Ride will be at
a leisurely pace.

Sep 18 (Sat) Shore Acres/Cape Arago Beach Hike - Class B
Starting from Sunset Bay Campground near Coos Bay, Oregon, we'll hike along the
headlands first visiting the public gardens of the old Simpson estate at Shore
Acres, then continuing south on a loop to Cape Arago with a sea lion view point.
Side trip down to beach possible. Hike 8.5 miles round trip with 500 feet elevation
gloss. Drivers may need a parking permit. Driving distance from Portland not measured.

Sep 18 (Sat) Lower Salmon River Hike & Dine - Class A
A special very accessible old growth hike on our way to this month's Hike and Dine at Tyee Lodge. The hike is 5.2 miles with about 100 feet of elevation gain. We will car pool and anyone continuing to the lodge will need dinner reservations ahead of time with the lodge host. I plan to stay to help clean up and return to Sandy about 9 pm if you ride with me. Driving distance not measured. Drivers may need a trailhead parking permit.

Sep 18-19 (Sat-Sun) Tyee Lodge Hike & Dine
Come join Bernice Schuchardt and her friend Marilyn Hays for a dinner of international cuisine. Main course will feature German cabbage rolls, several vegetable dishes from the cookbook of Bernice's friend in Monza, Italy, and ending with Marilyn's Wild Blackberry Cobbler. Maybe we will even have a little gelato to go on the cobbler. For breakfast we will have an egg dish, juice, cereal and homemade cinnamon rolls. As noted in the June Blazer, a gourmet dinner may cost a bit more than the usual $7, but breakfast will cost $3. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

Sep 23 (Thur) Multnomah Falls Bike Ride - Class C - 32 miles
(Or) Latourelle Falls - Class A - 12 miles
A great late summer ride. The Multnomah Falls Ride starts at 10 am at the Lewis and Clark State Park. We ride slowly up through Corbett with a stop at the Vista House. Then down hill, stop at Latourelle Falls to meet those on the short ride. Those on the Short Ride meet at Guy Talbot State Park (Latourelle Falls) I-84 East exit 28, W on Old Scenic Hwy to parking area at Guy Talbot State Park meet at 11:15am. Meeting place for the Multnomah Falls ride is Lewis and Clark State Park at 10:00am, I-84 East to exit 18. Follow signs to park. Bring lunch and lots of water.

Sep 25 (Sat) Larch Mt. Loop Hike - Class A
Enjoy a forest hike and panoramic mountain views of five volcanoes (weather
permitting) from Sherrard Point at 4055 feet elevation. After a break at Sherrard Point it is 2 miles downhill to our starting point. Hike 6.4 miles with 1300 feet of elevation gain. Drive 60 miles round trip.
Drivers may need a trailhead parking permit.

Anyone interested in camping in this Washington area on Sunday for a Monday hike - let me know promptly.
Indian Heaven is beautiful in Autumn. This loop contains rolling hills of woods and open huckleberry fields and passes 6 lakes. Hike 8 miles with 1200 feet elevation gain. It will be a full day since driving distance is 170 miles roundtrip. Drivers need a trailhead parking permit. Please register with leader by Sept. 11 before 9 pm.

See expansive views from Mt. Hood to Mt. Jefferson at the retired lookout tower. We will take this fairly strenuous hike at a moderate pace. Hike 8.2 miles round trip with 3200 feet elevation gain. Sign up with leader in advance as hike will be cancelled in event weather conditions impede views.

Mosier Tunnels Ride Report
Terry Lawson led a group of three other riders - TCO member Maureen Covell and guests Al and Emma Knot - along a route along the HCRH between Hood River and the Discovery Museum near The Dalles. The 39 mile ride featured spectacular views over the Columbia River and Gorge throughout, with 2600 feet of elevation gain over the route. Highlights included the first (and last) 3.5 miles on the protected bikeway converted from a segment of the old HCRH that passed through the remarkable Mosier Tunnels carved through the rock and the views near the Rowena Crest Overlook, as well as the restoring stop for ice cream near the end of ride in Mosier before the last climb back through the tunnels to the trailhead.
