Trails Trodden
Umatilla River Backpack
On Memorial Day weekend Glen and Linda Conrad lead us on an awesome backpack
to the north fork of the Umatilla river. We met at Gateway an had a scenic
drive down the Gorge all the way past Pendelton where we headed north. The
open rolling hills along this part of the drive were very green and lush from
the spring rains. Our sunny weather was a welcome break from the wet Portland
spring. The trail into the camp site followed the river and had many places
to stop and enjoy the sights and sounds of the crystal clear water. There were
a couple of challenging creek crossing and everyone did very good job getting
safely across. Camp site was along the river and made the nights sleep very
sound listening to the babbling of the water. I always like being around Glean
and Linda and learning from their wealth of outdoor knowledge. It amazes me
how they can prepare some very good food over an open fire. Linda made some
hot dogs and side dishes the first night and some of the best spaghetti the
second night. We did a day hike on Sunday going up Coyotte Ridge seeing some
very cool flowers and great sights across the open alpine meadows. This was
a real fun backpack with a great group of people
